My boss told me not to wear pajamas during video conferences or any other time while working from home. Why does it matter? I’m covered up. It is not a sexy nightie. What should I do when he says this during the next call?

Dear Lee Anne:
When he says it, take off your pajamas immediately. Problem solved and it’s more freeing.

The bottom line is that employers can set rules for folks working at home, even stupid rules and even during a pandemic. They just can’t discriminate or violate the various employment laws. If your employer establishes a dress code for people who are working from home, your two top choices are to either (1) Comply at all times; or (2) Keep “professional” clothes nearby and Speed Dress if the boss calls.
Readers – what would you do? And if you’re a boss — do you have a pajamas rule? (Responses when a fan asked a similar question in 2015 about telecommuting are below).
