Should I Have Been Disciplined For Saying “That’s So Retarded”?

February 25, 2013 by Jim 6 Comments

slapDear Evil Skippy:

I just received a written reprimand for using the word “retarded” at work.  I admit that I had been warned twice in the past for using the phrase “That is so retarded”, but it is a lifetime habit and the phrase just pops out sometimes.  I have nothing against people with developmental disabilities and am not trying to make fun of anyone.  It is just a word.  Do you think it is fair for my politically correct supervisor to issue written discipline over something like this?  We don’t have any disabled people working here so it is not like I am offending an actual person.

Dear NPOM:

Are you perhaps suggesting that your supervisor should just warn you forever even though the past warnings had no effect?  I think it would have been more fair if your supervisor slapped you for not taking care of the rude verbal habit on your own before she had to reprimand you.

Buy a thesaurus.  Use the thesaurus.  You can find many ways to express criticism without resorting to “retarded”.  That is, if you can read.  You don’t seem too bright to me.

Based on your way of thinking, it would be fine to use the N-word in the workplace so long as no one belongs to the race in question.  That makes no sense, and neither does your defense.  In fact, your defense is backward, birdbrained, defective, dim, dopey, moronic, sappy, simple, stupid, subnormal, underachieving and weak.  (Want to borrow my thesaurus?)

One of the beauties about language is that it evolves over time.  Many words and phrases come and go in terms of popularity or disdain.  “Retarded” has evolved into a word that kind people do not use as a derisive adjective.  You should try evolving so you can break your habit.

Keep in mind that just because no one working with you has Down syndrome, people may have loved ones with that condition (or may just have more empathy than you).  In other words, you may already have offended or hurt someone.  Be a grown up, take some responsibility and break the habit for your own good.

I once gave my toddler daughter a time out for pointing to a girl and saying “Retard.” After the time out, she did it again, insistently saying “Retard!”

It was then that I realized that the little girl was wearing a leotard.

    Fondly,
    Archie

I had a similar experience where my son was saying “restart”. I feel rather foolish.

Oh no! We’ve lost Evil Skippy to the overly sensitive politically correct crowd that annoys so many of us normal people who can hear words like “retarded” and “Christmas” without totally crumbling into a babyish little whining moron. Just get over it and move on. “That is so retarded” sometimes is the only way to correctly describe something, thesauruses included.

This morning at the gym during warm-ups I wanted to use the word “retarded” to compare hopping on my left foot to hopping on right foot, since on my left foot I am much slower. I refrained because even though I know the root meaning of the word, this is overshadowed by the fact that too many people use the word as an insult. Like comparing my awkward, slow left foot to my swift, graceful right foot, calling someone or something “retarded” relies on an implied comparison to someone who through no fault of their own is less capable of doing certain things. As Jim points out, it isn’t your “harmless” intent that makes the word inappropriate, it is the evolution of this word into a slur that makes it unfit for use in the workplace. But that’s sort of a moot point since there’s no question about whether the word is allowed in the letter writer’s particular workplace. NPOM has already been reprimanded TWICE for using the word. Whether you agree with your workplace policy or not, the policy is the policy, and if you can’t be careful enough to adhere to it, then of course you should be disciplined.

Would you continue to use the “N” word at work after being reprimanded twice?
    No?
    Then don’t the word “Retarded”.
